New security requirements for Zebra printers under the RED guidelines
The new EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) has introduced important cybersecurity requirements as of 1st of October 2025, which also affect Zebra printers. To ensure that all Zebra devices in the EMEA region comply with these regulations, Zebra has implemented a corresponding firmware update – installation of this update is required for the further use of the printers.
What has changed?
With Link-OS version 7.4.2, Zebra has introduced new security features that ensure all affected printer models meet the EU RED cybersecurity requirements.
The key changes at a glance:
- Network services – such as FTP, SNMP, HTTP and TCP RAW – are disabled by default and are enabled after authentication if required.
- Protected Mode is enabled by default, including mandatory password setup on first start-up.
- Firmware and file control: Firmware and protected file downloads are initially blocked and only enabled after authentication.
- Security features remain active even after a factory reset.
- Improved WLAN security: WPA/TKIP support has been removed; at least WPA2 (AES) is required.
- Control panel lock: The front panel remains locked until a PIN has been set.
These Zebra printers are affected:
- Industrial: ZT111, ZT211, ZT231, ZT411, ZT421, ZT510, ZT610, ZT620, ZE511, ZE521
- Desktop: ZD220, ZD230, ZD411, ZD421, ZD611, ZD621
- Mobile: ZQ310 Plus, ZQ320 Plus, ZQ511, ZQ521, ZQ610 Plus, ZQ620 Plus, ZQ630 Plus
RFID variants of the respective model families are also included.
(Note: Zebra’s communication regarding the ZD510 and card printers will follow at a later date.)
When was the change implemented?
- As of 15 September 2025, all new devices have been shipped with Link-OS v7.4.2.
- This version is not available for download and is used exclusively in factory production and during the repair process.
What needs to be considered during setup?
- Set an admin password
- Enable specific services as required via authenticated approval
- If necessary, configure a 4-digit PIN for the control panel.
